Well, I couldn't find a rule to point you to (surprisingly), so here's how it works:

When a player goes all-in, he can only win wagers equal to his (from as many players as are in the hand). So, while he is eligible to win everything in the pot while he has enough chips to make or call full bets, he is not entitled to any amounts bet above the amount he went all-in with. Any extra amount goes into a side pot.

For example, after normal betting both pre-flop and after the flop, all amounts bet would be in the main (and only) pot. Now, say, there are three players remaining and Player A goes all-in on the turn for $10. If Player B now raises to $25, Player A is only entitled to $10 of that (which would go into the main pot), and the additional $15 would go into a side pot. Player C can now call that $25, with $10 going into the main pot and $15 going into the side pot which only B or C can win. Since Player A is now out of chips, all additional bets would go into the side pot for B and C.

If, at the showdown, Player A has the best hand, he would win the main pot. The side pot would then be awarded to the better hand of Player B or Player C. If Player A does not have the best hand, then both pots would go to either Player B or Player C.

let say there are 3 people left at the table. The short stack goes all in.The other 2 players call. All the short stack can win is the amount of money he put in and the other two calls. The other 2 players can still play each other for a side pot, or a different pot from the all in pot.Who ever wins that pot then goes for the main pot.The side pot is the other pot the 2 two who are not all in are playing for.Hope this helped.

Yeah, thanks for the clarification guys - as I've said before I generally just let the dealer deal with where the chips go and take what I'm given, though I was aware that you can only win what you put in when you're short stacked and all in.
